PRIYANKA
Her eyes crossed as the aarti thaali went round and round in front of her face. Priyanka shifted her gaze away from it and her new mother-in-law and to the house towering behind the older lady.
Sheâd created so many memories in this house, from playing hide and seek in its lavish lawns to hiding away with Aarush in dark corners in the latter years. Sheâd built castles in the air around this man and this house, and now those castles were tumbling through the sky and landing on her head.
âCome,â her mother-in-law beckoned them in and Priyanka and Aarush raised their right leg in unison, crossing the threshold together. A strange hush surrounded her, sound receding from the space and a numbness spreading through her body as she followed Aarush down the familiar corridor and into the hall beyond it.
Theyâd renovated at some point in the last few years, she absently noted. She remembered a lot of carved woodwork but now the room had the kind of plush upholstery that spoke of shopping trips to Italy.
She bent at the waist to touch Aarushâs fatherâs feet, acutely conscious of Aarush beside her doing the same. His fingers grazed hers inadvertently and her breath hitched. Aarush turned his face slightly towards hers, his hooded eyes boring into her, a dark invitation in them.
Beg. He wanted her to beg.
The mental reminder had her averting her gaze from his and straightening quickly. Her father-in-law was saying something but her scrambled and exhausted brain couldnât focus.
âAnd then you can look at a honeymoon in Europeâ¦â
She forced herself to focus on the conversation. This was the moment sheâd been dreading.
âActually,â she said hesitantly. âI need to report for duty tomorrow. I canât take any more vacation time.â
Her father-in-lawâs bushy eyebrows shot up comically. âWhat duty? You donât do duty.â
âYes, she does,â Aarushâs quiet voice answered before she could. âIf thatâs what she wants to do, then thatâs what she does.â
His father frowned, a ferocious glower which would have had Priyanka quailing, but sheâd stood her ground with her own father and the Kodela glower was, in her opinion, unmatched.
âShe is Janardhan Reddyâs daughter-in-law,â the older man thundered.
âShe is Aarush Reddyâs wife first.â An implacable look on his face, Aarush faced his father.
She glanced from one man to the other, a wicked streak of amusement winding its way through her. Well, if talking about yourself in the third person was a family thingâ¦
âDr. Priyanka Reddy is her own person,â she murmured, her words dropping into the silence that had fallen due to the father-son standoff.
Aarush gave her an arrested look, the usage of his surname in conjunction with her name clearly meaning something to him.
âI like to work, Mamagaru.â She faced her father-in-law. âI enjoy my job.â
He waved a dismissive hand in the air. âIâll build a hospital for you. Be the boss and work a few days a week to keep in touch or whatever. But you canât be listening to other people telling you whether you can go on holiday or not.
